Dr. Lieberman and his colleagues from the Texas Allergy Society returned to the Capitol this session to support expanding access to epinephrine through SB 1619. The bill was recently passed by the Senate Education Committee with a unanimous vote and is now awaiting further legislative action. Despite the wait, all signs are very positive for passage before the end of the session.
SB 1619 would permit schools and public places to stock the newly available nasal epinephrine delivery devices. In an emergency, especially when a young child is experiencing a severe allergic reaction, the ability to administer life-saving medication nasally rather than through injection could make a big difference. Giving the epinephrine nasally versus an injection in the leg of an apprehensive child would be a game changer, as it’s a lot easier to administer.
