Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) Update - May 2018

We are pleased to report that we have now enrolled our 16th patient. 15 patients have been treated for peanut therapy and one child recently began therapy for milk allergy. 5 have completed and are in the maintenance phase, while 3 additional patients are very near completion. Fortunately, none of our patients have withdrawn from the program due to side effects of therapy. The age range of our patients is from 4-30, with an average age of 9. Our one adult patient has successfully completed the program and is now safely eating 8 peanuts a day!

It is important to remember that this is a treatment and not a cure for food allergies. Once the maximum dose is reached, typically 8-12 peanuts a day, this must be ingested daily on a forever basis. Recent studies have shown that even a low dose of peanut protein of 300 mg (1¼ peanut) can significantly reduce the risk of accidental exposures and cross contamination.

Spring/Summer is the ideal time to consider starting OIT as children are out of school and there are less colds and viruses that can make up-dosing difficult. Please give us a call if you’d like to consider this therapy for yourself or your child.
