Cluster aeroallergen immunotherapy (AIT) schedules are designed to allow a more rapid advance during the build-up phase of IT. In our office, three injections are administered on two separate visits, one week apart. Total time in the office is estimated at 2 ½ – 3 hours for each visit.
This accelerated option reduces the overall number of visits required to achieve a maintenance AIT dose. By getting to a maintenance dose more quickly, the beneficial effects of AIT are attained sooner. In addition, less visits offer greater convenience to our patients. The overall number of AIT visits from start to maintenance is reduced by 35%.
In terms of risk, some studies have shown an increased risk of allergic shot reactions due to accelerated AIT. Premedication appears to help reduce this risk.
