FDA considering adding sesame to list of major allergens

Did you know that the FDA is considering adding sesame to the list of allergens food manufacturers are required on their product labels?

Current federal law requires that foods products containing one of the eight “major food allergens” – milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans – be clearly labelled and declared using its common or usual name on food labels. This law called the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCA) was passed in 2004. These eight food groups account for 90% of serious food allergies in the US.

We have been seeing a rise of sesame allergy cases as well and that is why the FDA is considering adding it as the ninth major allergen. For more information and to comment to the FDA yourself, please see the following:
